Ultherapy is a focused-ultrasound treatment that lifts and tightens skin without needles or incisions. A handpiece shows the provider an ultrasound image of the tissue, then delivers small points of heat at set depths, down to the deep support layer that a surgical facelift works on. The heat prompts new collagen, and the lift builds gradually over two to three months as it forms. Other devices use the same principle and are often sold as HIFU, short for high-intensity focused ultrasound.

The FDA has cleared Ultherapy to lift the eyebrow and the skin under the chin and on the neck, and to improve lines and wrinkles on the chest. A full face and neck usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. The treatment can feel hot and uncomfortable, so clinics often offer pain relief, and most people go back to normal activities the same day with some redness, swelling or tenderness.
